Document Journal Fall/Winter 2020 Issue No. 17
For our 17th issue, we embarked on a search for new forms of counterculture today. The increasingly globalized, networked world of 2020 has collapsed the space between the popular and the fringe, stripping legacy countercultural activity of its subversive edge—so in the absence of a monolithic mainstream to counter, what does meaningful resistance and rebellion look like?
This question has taken us across the globe and to the deepest corners of the web, through the history of protest, and inside temporary autonomous zones. We embarked on this issue looking for fringe communities, niche subcultures, and people visibly opposing the mainstream, but emerged with a new understanding of counterculture that bears little resemblance to that of the past. Rather than a single community or movement, we found that counterculture is a way of looking at the world around you, engaging with others, renouncing dogma, and welcoming reinvention.
The issue features some of the most significant creative minds working today, among them: Yara Shahidi, Timothée Chalamet, Arca, Ai Weiwei, Dawoud Bey, Honey Dijon, Juliana Huxtable, Freddie Gibbs, Moxie Marlinspike, Sarah Lewis, Hedi Slimane, slowthai, and many more.
New covers will be unveiled over the coming weeks. All orders will ship when US business resumes as usual.
